Importing SolidWorks multiple object problem.

Post by Papam Studios » Tue Jun 14, 2011 4:18 am

We recently purchased Solidworks to 3ds Max importer, everything works fine, but we faced problem of importing multiple objects. Even when option "Import as single object" is disabled, we have in the end single mesh object.

For us this is a serious problem, since the amount of detail sometimes comes to thousands (in multi-body SolidWorks file) and we can not save them in separate files and import one by one.

Maybe we missed something...

Thanks in advance.
Daniil.

are you exporting the solidworks model as assembly (*.sldasm) or as a part
The file should be saved as an assembly.

The plugin utilizes the OBJ importer included in 3DS so it may be affected by the setting in OBJ import.
Importing an OBJ file will show the following dialog:

Make sure Import as single mesh is not clicked

Thanks for the fast answer.

I made two tests.

1.Multibody objects assembled together and imported as assembly file.
test2.jpg
- imported 4 assembly parts instead of 5 (spring part inserted twice - imported as single object) .
- the importer not recognized the inner multi-body parts.

Test 2.

Step by step.

Part 1 - made of 18 solid bodies
1.jpg
Part 2 - single object.

Assembly of both of them.

Settings of the .obj import and settings of importer itself.

As result we have 2 bodies instead of 19. :(

multiple bodies of the same part using the same material are imported as a single part in 3DS.
A work around that you can do is to assign different material for each body you want to separate.

Also you can try using SimLab Composer which will give you more power to break the SolidWorks part to its bodies using
Tools -> Geometry -> Break Geometry
and Break Faces

After that you can export the file as structure based OBJ and import it to 3DS

We will add an option to break bodies and faces in future releases of the plugin

Hi again, thanks for answers.
I understand the problem with the materials and porting dependency.
But for me assigning different material to each object is not an option.

Example of the work - 7500 parts - and it's a 1/4'th of the work project.

My Solidworks 2010 seem not have option of .OBJ export. :(

So from your words I understand that I need to purchase an additional product to be able to work. Because current tool can not bring separately clone assembly parts and multibody parts. And I'm unable to work until the next update of the importer program...

Thanks for the file. This will be address in next update
For now you can use SimLab Composer 3D PDF edition (we will send it for any plugin user who needs it for free)
The user can import the solidWorks model.
Save it as OBJ combined based on structure
and import the saved OBJ file in 3DS Max

The following image shows the result in 3DS Max
