Carbon road bike

Postby Höregrö » Mon Nov 06, 2017 8:32 pm

I finally had some spare time for a personal project so I designed this carbon road bike as a surface modeling excercise. Saddle, brake levers, cranks and derailleurs are from grabcad. Scene is lit with an overhead emissive plane + hdri for fill light. Rendered in Composer 6.1. I'm happy with how the handle bar tape turned out, the wrapping lines are modeled but I'm using a velvet material with a normal map + opacity map for the perforated look. I'm using the metallic paint material in the frame - works great as a matte finish and looks more convincing than using just a matte material. Easily my favorite material type, so versatile! Any chance to see more procedural materials similar to it in future composer versions?

Here's a full black version of the frame in 4k. This is lit with just an emitter plane.

Here's one more. I added a bottle + cage and decals for the wheels.

Very good work. I like the frame of the bike. I tried to imagine how you did it.

Cool rendering. Honestly, the black details are bit lost with this background and illumination.

I like the wrapper on the handlebars. This part is UV mapped or did the texture simple fit well?

In the current SL version you will not find new procedural materials. You will find improved glass material and few relatively useful additions for few other materials.

Modeling and rendering are great, I agree the dark background hides part of the model details.

Thanks for the comments! The renders are quite dark, maybe my monitor needs some calibration to see the issue better...

I'm using Solidworks so no access to UV-mapping. The wrapping edge is modeled and the perforations + leather grain are done with bump and opacity maps (just box mapped in composer).

Very nice!
Maybe you can add some light spots, but I like the dark background.
Did you use T-Splines in Solidworks?

Nope, didn't use T-splines just basic solidworks surfacing tools.
