Import STP Files

Postby Pilou » Thu May 25, 2017 5:53 pm

Does it normal that a Step files takes some minutes (here 4 minutes) to be imported inside SimLab?
It's a simple surface! (sure a little frenetic but ... :)
file.stp linked (122 kb)
In a CAD program that takes one second!!!

Does it the same for you :?:

Frenchy,

I used the default import setting (middle) an it did take several minutes.
Setting it to coarse (all the way to the right), the import was just a few seconds. Now I have it set closer to the left, about 25% or so and its been close to 5 minutes and still going.

Did you try saving this out first as an obj?

I think Moi's settings should give you a pretty nice mostly quad model. Try to keep the mesh resolution as low as possible and still have enough polys to shade smoothly.

Its actually not so simple to triangulate this shape, which is why Simlab is struggling with it. I bet saving from Moi as a mesh will be slow at higher resolution.

@Chrisd
As my cad prog don't export "surface alone" so i take a thickness with Extrude for have a volume
so i can export in OBJ from my CAD program!

Now import format Obj inside SImlab take 2 seconds! 8-)
Of course i can take a very little thickness for simulate a "surface alone" ! ;)

And better I can Explode my volume inside SImlab so I have my "surface alone" ! :)
Excellent! 8-)

Do you want a piece of chocolate ? ;)

The STP was from another cad program, not Moi?

It is very textural for nurbs. :D

Yes you right! It's Moi3D with a very tricky use of Distort Curves of Max Smirnov! ;)
(increase the number of Points & Rebuild)
Works like a charm! 8-)
(in the model above i don't take the 2 sides of the following image just Loft the internal curves) :ugeek:

:D :D :D
In fact Export Single surface in OBJ format is possible in Moi3D!
I was hallucinated!
So more and more easy and speedy : 2 seconds Import / Export : the dream! 8-)

Can you do a screenshot of the triangulation detail (wireframe) that you exported from Moi as an OBJ, or share the OBJ file?

I used the Moi trial a long time ago, and I don't have a way to test Moi's export on this object and don't have any more saves.

I'm really considering getting Moi just to get good meshes from nurbs. I think this is a good test object.

Sure: here the OBJ - (default size - only triangles): 78 022 Polys, 40 197 points, Weld verticies along edges
and the 3dm...
(Moi is concidered as the better OBJ exporter of Nurbs world! Rhinoceros users buy it for that)

Ngones : 34 329 Polys, 39890 points

The mesh looks good. Much better than my attempts to export it from another cad application and retopo.

Thanks
