Loading time of 11 minutes

Post by cyana » Fri Dec 28, 2018 12:41 am

Dear SimLab,

I'm experiencing odd loading times - one of the files takes 11 minutes to load. The strange thing is that the loading time does not appear to be consistent - I have files that take 2 minutes to load, while a similar file is loaded within seconds. Wondering what could cause the problem and if there maybe is a way to restructure the file to reduce its loading time?

Hardware:
Dell Precision 7910 tower workstation
Xeon ES-2697 v3 14core @ 2.60 GHz
32GB RAM
AMD FirePro W9100 16GB GDDR5
512 GB SSD drives

Software:
Win 10pro x 64
Composer 9.010

thank you very much!

@cyana,

What is the nature of the loading operation? Is it import or open? What are you trying to load? Do all files have the same extensions?

Hello jsaid,

these are all standard .sim files and I'm just opening them in SimLab Composer 9.010 (same for earlier versions of Composer 9, did not happen with Composer 7)

thanks

@cyana,

We conducted the following test with a .sim file of size 1.5 GB on the same PC which SLC9.0.10:

1st Run:
Load #1 > 1 minute and 33 seconds
Load #2 > 1 minute and 16 seconds
Load #3 > 1 minute and 32 seconds
Load #4 > 2 minutes and 04 seconds

2nd Run:
Load #1 > 1 minute and 36 seconds

As a conclusion, the above numbers are explainable and the difference could be logical and acceptable. In general, the loading time is variable and may vary from time to time even on the same machine. That refers on many factors, one depends on the operating system itself and the number of applications that read/write (Disk Utilization) at the same time. For faster read/write operations, users often go to replace their mechanical hard disk drives (HDD) with solid state drives (SSD) or even NVMe (m.2).

... and the biggy jsaid - network speed if the files are on any sort of network. Many a time I've thought my PC was playing up and it's been network load elsewhere or a Windows upgrade hogging all the network bandwidth :?

Hello jsaid,

thank you for your tests! The loading speed of your files > 1.5 GB is amazing. As pointed out above I'm using a Dell workstation with SSDs, so disk speed should not be a problem.

I've uploaded a zipped version of my 11min file on my webserver:

... maybe you could try the loading time on your equipment?

many thanks!

@Pocc

I'm very sure that it's not a network issue as the loading time is not changing whenever I open the file.

thanks
